CaIifom,a Politic. August 24. Dennis San Fbakcisoo, rSSuD bi. arrival from Vallejo last ;Xt addressed a crowd or zu.uw id me S vindictive feeling which Availed during the day had apparently Fn nTwto dinumshed, and at a word from J LI " .1 ''r; without hesitation to S venSanoa on DeYbung. Kearney S Jtheitaation fully and addressed imjf to the task of quieting the passions oSfollows. aemndedXhem lht in ten days the election would pat the whole machinery of the city government in their hands, and that the proprietors of the Chronicle would unfailingly get their deserts; that at present any attempt at violence would be met by the revolvers of the police and rifles and Gatling guns of the military, and that the game was not worth the shedding of-the blood of one honest man. He adjured them by their regard for their reputation throughout the country to do no violence but to disperse quietly to their homes. lie announced that to-morrow afternoon he would rcejl themcn the Sand Lots, and that in the meantime he would inquire more fully into the state of affiira, aud would then, he believed, be a'ie to show them how to dispose of the matter with credit to themselves. Never was Kearney's boundless influence over his followed exhibited to better advan tage. Although the vast crowd were fiirly howling for the blood of the De Youngs they yielded implicitly to his ad vice, and when he dismissed them surged away in various directions evidently pre pared to follow his advice to the letter. Shortly after midnight last night half of the police force were relieved from duty, the remainder staying at the station except about thirty who were detailed to guard the Chronicle office and some other points. The military were also disbanded with the exception ot a detail at each armury. The Bireet8were quiet throughout the night and the crowd went home except two or three hundred men who remained in front of the station. It was rumored at 2 a. m. that Mr. Kal loch was sinking and, ; would not perhaps live till morning. Mr. II. DeYoung, in an interview with a reporter of the Alia GaUfornian last night, said that, the offensive 'statement in the Chronicle with regard to Kalloch's family history, which provoked Kalloch to retaliation, came to them by telegraph from Boston at 1:30 in the morning," dur ing the absence of both himself and brother, and was published without their knowledge. Having made it, however, Ihey determined to stand to it. He said furthermore that "Kalloch might .have known that he could not go upon a public platform and traduce pur mother and family without stern and bitter retribu tion, lie knew he took" his life in his own hands when he spoke as he did. My brother simply acted as any man would have acted who had any spark of man hood about him." The luorning papers comment severely upon the general course and management of DeYoiiDe's journal. The Call sava the Chronicle has long had a private detec tive agency, which has filled the pigeon holes of its office with material to be used to extort moaey or pull down men who would not be blackmailed. It has boasted of its ability to kill any man whom it did not like. iNo other community in America, probably, has been so disgraced and despoiled by a public journal as this. The Alta California n says the Chronicle has been assaulting characters and reputa tions of men, women and girls in this city wr years, and charges the responsibility therefor upon the public which has given such a paper patronsge. It closes by say ing : "The course of the Chronicle has been demoralizing, indecent and infamous." The lead ing clergymen of the city, in their sermons yesterday, gave considerable prominence to the De Young-Kalloch affray, condemn ing the assault on Kalloch as cruel and cowardly, and citing it as an evidence of social demoralization and a low state of civilization. From various points in the interior come expression of private and public opinion condemning the De Youngs for tbe course pursued by tbe Uironicie. and the subsequent attack on Kalloch. The leaders of the Workingmen's par y held a conference with Kalloch's medical attendants to-day, to consider the expedi ency of putting up some other man for mayor. The physicians informed them that at present they saw nothing in the condition of Kalloch to render such a course necessary, and r intimated the pro bability of his early recovery. . Charles DeYoung was brought before the Police Court to-day and, waiving an examination, was held to answer tbe charge of assault with intent to kill, with out bail. imcllaneou. Mount Holly, N.
